Manhattan College is a Roman Catholic liberal arts college in the Riverdale section of the Bronx (formerly located in Manhattan), which is the northernmost of the five boroughs of New York City, also being, as Bronx County, the newest of the 62 counties of New York State. It is the only borough not primarily located on an island and it has a population estimated at a number of more than 1 390 000 inhabitants, for the 2008 year, fact which makes it the fourth-most-populated of the five boroughs, the fourth-largest in land area, and the third-highest in density of population.
Manhattan College was founded in 1853, by five French Lasallian Brothers, as the Academy of the Holy Infancy, its current name being adopted in 1863, being moved to The Bronx, in 1922, as it outgrew its facilities in Manhattanville, the college's former location, before being moved to its present site. The college offers its students various educational program degrees through 5 undergraduate schools: Business, Arts, Engineering, Education and Science, The School of Art being the largest school overall at the college, but the School of Engineering is the college's most well-known program.
Manhattan College's athletic teams are known as the Manhattan Jaspers, who compete in 19 sports for men and women, in the NCAA Division I, including in soccer, basketball, softball, volleyball and lacrosse, track&field being the school's strongest sport. The college also had a football team, from 1924 until 1942, which posted an all-time record of 194 wins, 198 losses, and 22 ties, after the 1942 season, the football team being suspended, never being reactivated, since then.
